Create IT Linux PC systems
Linux is a free operating system that provides a great value, and excellent reliability particularly for workgroup and web servers, and in some cases also for desktop workstations.
As a company involved in web development, Create IT uses Linux servers extensively for web hosting.
Based on our web hosting experience, we can set up Linux servers for small workgroups or for intranet functionality. Our preferred distribution is Ubuntu, because it is completely free, up to date, easy to maintain, and has commercial support options. We also use CentOS.
Server Systems
Linux is ideally suited for use as a workgroup file server or intranet server. It is possible to set up a server, so that all administration can be performed by an easy to use web interface, than even administrators without Linux experience can quickly learn to use.

Workstations
Linux workstations aren't necessarily the best option for every PC, but for people with simple or in some cases specialised requirements they may be an option due to low cost and reliability.
- Are you PCs mostly used for wordprocessing, web and email?
- Do you want to restrict your users from downloading and installing random software?
- Are you able to run most of your internal database applications as web applications?
- Do you use well supported peripherals such as printers, scanners etc?
If you can answer yes to most of these questions, then Linux on the desktop could save you considerably on your software and maintainence costs.
Create IT does NOT recommend Linux systems for video editing, as there is not a great deal of good software available for Linux. Windows provides a much better platform for video editing, although using Linux file servers combined with Windows workstations does make a lot of sense.
